She dropped the phone into the bag, took off the Marigolds and threw them after it. She picked up the laptop, thought again, closed it and placed it on the wall unit. The bin bag joined Lori inside Dylan’s toy cupboard.

Suddenly ravenous, Sylvia emptied Gerrard’s shopping onto the worktop: bread, milk and orange juice, cold meats and several tins of soup. With a mulligatawny soup warming in the microwave, she ripped open the pack of ham, pulled two slices of bread from the packet, and made a rough sandwich, biting off a quarter of it immediately. She suddenly stopped eating, dropped the sandwich onto the floor, stared at her hands, rushed to the sink and held her hands under the hot tap. Pulling everything out of her cleaning cupboard, she chose the bottle of Stardrops and poured the ammonia cleaner onto her hands, scrubbing at her nails and between her fingers until they were red raw and stinging. As she turned off the tap, she heard a phone ringing and froze, recognising it as Lori’s ringtone. She followed the sound to Dylan’s cupboard. She ran to her bedroom, rummaged in her bedside table drawer until she located earplugs, screwed them into her ears and lay face down on the bed, a pillow over her head.
